Choosing a VET certificate
Victorian school students can undertake a wide range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates. VET can be part of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). It can also be included in the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC).
Schools are encouraged to offer a broad range of VET certificates aligned to strengths, interests and aspirations of their students and are encouraged to consider certificates in the VCE VET offering 14 pathways.
When choosing which VET certificate(s) to offer, schools should think about:
- student interests
- career goals
- further study pathways
- senior secondary certificate requirements
- specific certificate requirements, such as:
- if the course is suitable for school-aged learners
- if scored assessment is available
- if Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is expected or wanted
- if the course includes mandatory workplace requirements
- local industry needs and employment opportunities
- access to providers and opportunities to work with other schools through clusters.
Schools must think about both student demand and interest. They must also think about how the certificate could be delivered. Some certificates work best with direct RTO delivery. Other certificates can work for auspice delivery. Auspice can work if the school has the right facilities, equipment and qualified staff. Further guidance on this is available below in the section titled 'Due diligence and school readiness for auspice delivery'.
