Overview
The capability of our business managers is key to supporting effective and successful school operations. Having a structured approach to capability development is therefore important to ensure development for all business managers is focused on those skills critical to their roles. The Business Manager Capability Framework (the Framework)Â describes the capabilities required of business managers in a school of any size.
The Framework identifies the knowledge and skills considered essential for a school business manager to be effective in their role (noting that the provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at education support class level 1 range 3). These capabilities cover 3Â broad areas:
- technical skills (finance, governance, operational management, resource coordination)
- people skills (stakeholder engagement, relationship building, supportive leadership, teamwork)
- self-mastery (ethics and values, problem solving, flexibility, planning, resilience)
The Framework should be used for:
- developing a position description or role for a business manager in a school consistent with the Dimensions of Work — Education Support Class
- as a tool to identify areas for capability development as part of the performance and development process
- setting goals for a performance and development plan
- determining the skills needed for success in a business manager role
