Policy

This policy sets out requirements for schools using, maintaining and modifying relocatable buildings.

Summary

  • Schools must clean and maintain relocatable buildings in the same way as permanent buildings.
  • Schools must not make permanent structural alterations to relocatable buildings.
  • Schools may conduct minor works on relocatable buildings such as installing cupboards and benches.
  • This policy falls within the 'Manage' stage of the School Asset Lifecycle.

Details

Relocatable buildings are a cost-effective, flexible and rapid means of supplementing existing classrooms in schools with fluctuating enrolments. Through the Relocatable Building Program (RPB), the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) helps schools across the state ensure their students have appropriate facilities.

For more information about how the VSBA allocates relocatable buildings through the RBP, refer to the Relocatable Building Program Fact SheetExternal Link in the Resources tab.

Schools must clean and maintain relocatable buildings in the same way as permanent buildings.

Schools are not permitted to make permanent structural alterations to relocatable facilities. Any galleries, decks, covered walkways or additions installed by schools must be structurally independent from the relocatable building. When the VSBA removes a relocatable building, the school will be responsible for any necessary demolition or modification costs related to such alterations.

Any fixtures or fittings provided by the RBP (including those replaced by the school) are to remain in the building for transfer.

The VSBA discourages schools from installing central hubs for power, communication systems or other services in relocatable buildings. Schools will have to move these services if the relocatable building is required on another site.

Schools may conduct minor works on relocatable facilities such as installing cupboards and benches (not across module joins), general maintenance and repairs, security cameras, and downpipes. Approval from the RBP team leader is required to install solar panels on relocatable buildings. Schools may contact their department regional office or the VSBA for further guidance.
